ACRL/NY First Year Experience Discussion Group: Library Instruction for the First-Year Student in the Age of AI

ACRL/NY’s First Year Experience Discussion Group co-chairs Carl Andrews (Bronx Community College) and Derek Stadler (LaGuardia Community College), invite members to attend our Spring 2025 Discussion Group meeting.

Library Instruction for the First-Year Student in the Age of AI

This presentation will explore innovative strategies for enhancing information literacy instruction for first-year college students through the effective use of artificial intelligence tools. The session will cover:

  • The evolving role of AI in academic research and learning.
  • Practical methods for incorporating AI into library instruction.
  • Strategies for teaching students how to critically evaluate AI generated content.
  • Best practices for guiding college freshmen to utilize AI responsibly and ethically in their research.

Our guest speakers that day will be Iris Finkel, Assistant Professor and Web & Digital Initiatives Librarian at Hunter College, and Kelly Karst, Reference & Instruction Librarian at Brooklyn College. Both are members of the CUNY OLS AI Task Force.

Attendees will gain insights and practical strategies for improving student engagement, developing critical thinking skills, and ensuring students are equipped to navigate the rapidly changing research landscape. We encourage all academic librarians who work with freshmen students to attend.
