The State University of New York at Old Westbury seeks a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented individual for the Reference and Instruction Librarian position. As a member of the Department, the Reference and Instruction Librarian will have opportunities to collaborate within the library and across campus to support student success and provide responsive reference and instruction services to the Old Westbury community. This includes opportunities to support and create information literacy learning modules and develop workshops. This role supports student success by providing information literacy instruction and continuously adapting and improving information literacy efforts. Early career librarians and/or recent MLIS graduates are encouraged to apply.


Design and deliver classroom and online information literacy instruction for various disciplines and collaborate with faculty to integrate information literacy into courses.
Create and maintain digital learning materials, such as research guides, videos, and tutorials, to support information literacy instruction and promote library resources and services.
Monitor trends and developments in emerging technologies and professional standards to enhance information literacy instruction and library services.
Evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of library instruction efforts.
Coordinate and manage information literacy assessment efforts, including creating assessment instruments such as surveys, focus groups, interviews, rubrics, balanced scorecards, and internal data collection forms.
Schedule and coordinate Instruction sessions.
Develop, deliver, and assess information literacy instruction rooted in the SUNY general education and Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) framework.
Participate in collection development activities and liaise with multiple campus departments as assigned, preferably in the liberal arts disciplines and First Year Experience.
Participate in Research Help Desk rotation for on-site and virtual reference, including some evening and weekend shifts.
Participate in collection management activities such as serial and monograph weeding and database review and selection.
Establish and sustain an ongoing service and scholarship record.
Engage in college service and maintain professional development through continuing education and professional organizations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Works some rotating evenings and weekends.

This is a full-time, twelve (12) month tenure-track position. As a full-time, tenure-track faculty member, the librarian is expected to be a committed member of the library department, engage in service, participate in faculty governance, and provide service to the college, as outlined in the Faculty Bylaws. Other duties may be assigned, and some evenings and weekends are required. The successful candidate will be cooperative, confident, customer-centered, and eager to engage with libraries’ changing services and methods. In addition, this position will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in librarianship, continuing education and service, commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated experience in the delivery of library instruction or teaching experience at the secondary or college level.
Ability to provide reference and instruction services in all formats.
Evidence of problem solving and analytical skills.
Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly.
Experience creating web-based guides, instructional videos and tutorials.
Knowledge of and experience using library related systems such as Springshare Libapps/LibGuide and Ex Libris ALMA/Primo, etc.
Ability to develop assessment tools and assess for the instructional program.
Familiarity with Creative Commons and Fair Use licenses.
A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

Required Qualifications:

An ALA-accredited Master of Library Science or Master of Library Information Science degree.
One (1) year of experience in a public or academic library.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends in information literacy instruction and reference services.
Demonstrated effective presentation, training, or teaching ability.
Knowledge of current and emerging instructional and library-related technologies.
Experience creating web-based guides, videos, and tutorials.
Proficient in using classroom and learning management technologies (e.g., Blackboard, D2L).
Strong commitment to public service and teamwork with the ability to work successfully with faculty, staff, students, and other library stakeholders and patrons.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with instruction and reference services in an academic library setting.
Experience with emerging technologies in academic libraries.
Experience with instructional technologies and tools as related to information literacy and the application in academic libraries.

Salary Range:

$55,899.00 to $66,627.00 commensurate with education and experience
