Job Description:

The Director of Academic Success provides leadership for the Libraries’ Academic Success division. The division is currently made up of four departments: Information Literacy, Reference & Research Services, Academic Success Librarians and Special Collections, Archives and Preservation. Information Literacy empowers students to be confident users and creators of information in a dynamic and continually evolving information landscape. Reference recommends, interprets, evaluates, and/or uses information resources to help patrons with specific information needs. Academic Success librarians provide collection development, reference, instruction, scholarly communication services, outreach and marketing, and user experience. Special Collections and Archives staff support and manage unique manuscripts and archival materials, rare books, and the University’s official records.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Leads and manages the Libraries’ Academic Success Division which includes collection development, reference, instruction, scholarly communication services, outreach and marketing, and user experience activities.
• Provides leadership and direction for the development and management of the Libraries’ collections in all formats to meet the research, teaching, and learning needs of the University at Albany faculty and students.
• Provides leadership and direction for consortia agreements and partnerships. Represents the University at all SUNY-wide collection groups as appropriate.
• Manages the Libraries’ Acquisitions budget, including allocations and expenditures, and maintains budget funds in the library services platform (Alma).
• Manages and oversees academic and professional faculty, including 14 direct reports.
• Coordinates initiatives and collaborate within the Libraries, and with other units on campus, to provide services to support student success.
• Participates in the development of policies for the Division and the Libraries, and the University.
• Fosters effective communication and teamwork across the Division and the Libraries.
• Advises and mentors faculty.
• Contributes to the profession, the Libraries, and the Division through scholarship and service.
• Works with Library Leadership to facilitate ongoing evolution of services to support student and faculty academic success


Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Library/Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent internationally recognized accrediting organization.
• Seven (7) years-post degree completion of progressively responsible library leadership experience in an academic or research library, including supervisory experience.
• Experience in one or more areas of collection services including collection development, collection management, and collection assessment.
• Ability to successfully manage and steward library collections budgets.
• Demonstrated knowledge of open access and open educational resource trends and best practices.
• Experience designing, delivering, and assessing services and programming that support academic success and research excellence.
• Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary trends and key issues in higher education and research libraries.
• Demonstrated success in personnel management including the ability to lead and engage employees through the process of organizational improvement and change and to foster creativity and innovation.
• Demonstrated and sustained record of scholarly publications and professional service at the Associate (tenured) level.
• Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within a diverse campus community.

Preferred Qualifications:
• MBA, MPA, or equivalent from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated project management skills.
• Experience working in a unionized environment.
• Experience working in a Library with Faculty Status for Librarians.
• Experience in library acquisitions and procurement.
• Demonstrated skills in providing creative and innovative solutions in collections work.
