Two Volunteer Opportunities with ACRL/NY for 2023

Come volunteer with ACRL/NY!

Are you engaged in academic and/or research library work, or are you a current or recently graduated library school student interested in becoming more involved professionally?

ACRL/NY seeks diverse volunteers to take on active roles within our vibrant community, located in the New York City area.

There are two different volunteer opportunities available:

Symposium Planning Committee Members

Led by two enthusiastic Co-Chairs, the Symposium Planning Committee (SPC) is responsible for the planning and production of the annual ACRL/NY Symposium in December of 2023. This is a group of about 20-25 volunteers who will collaborate to develop a theme and program for the symposium, and also take on a variety of roles, from marketing, registration, logistics, etc. to coordinating the symposium scholarship program (and everything in between!)

This group will meet monthly on Fridays 11am-12:30pm (excluding July and August) in hybrid mode, with folks gathering at Mercy College-Manhattan as well as participating via Zoom. The Spring meeting dates are: 1/20, 2/17, 3/24, 4/21, 5/19, and 6/16. Fall dates TBD. The Symposium typically takes place the first Friday of December. We are investigating potential ways to present at least parts of the symposium virtually, but it is expected that SPC members will attend and support the symposium in person on the day of the event. All SPC members must be members of ACRL/NY (although they need not be members of ACRL national).

Benefits of membership on the SPC include collaborative experience, networking opportunities, plus a letter documenting your service for tenure or promotion if applicable to your position.

Professional Development Committee Members

Led by two experienced Co-Chairs, the Professional Development Committee (PDC) is responsible for planning and producing at least three programs or events directly related to the professional development of the membership during 2023.This is a group of about 6 volunteers who will collaborate to assess the professional development needs of the membership, brainstorm to develop a series of events meeting those diverse needs, help recruit event facilitators, and assist with logistics for the events.

This group will meet occasionally via Zoom at the convenience of PDC members. PDC events will take place in different modalities–some online only, some hybrid, and some in-person–but it is expected that SPC members may need to attend and support some events in person. All PDC members must be members of ACRL/NY (although they need not be members of ACRL national).

Benefits of membership on the PDC include collaborative experience, networking opportunities, plus a letter documenting your service for tenure or promotion if applicable to your position.
