Student Scholarship Winners
Gretchen Alexander 
Gretchen Alexander is a library graduate student at Pratt Institute. Her research interests include critical pedagogy and queer knowledge networks, and she currently works at the Schomburg Center in New York City.
Kristen Burroughs 
Kristen Burroughs lives near Kansas City and is pursuing her MLIS at Emporia State University. She has twelve years of experience in healthcare and has been a registered nurse for nine. She currently works as a nurse in a Kansas City hospital, and as a customer service associate in a local public library system, and hopes to eventually work in an academic health sciences library.
Laura Wachter 
I am a 22 year old graduate student currently attending Rutgers’ University School of Information and Library Science, with a concentration in Archives and Preservation. As an undergraduate, I attended Western Connecticut State University, where I received a bachelor’s in history and worked in the Ruth A. Haas Library as a student worker.
Early Career Librarian Scholarship Winner
Jennifer Castle 
Reference and Government Documents Librarian Jennifer Castle works at Tennessee State University (HBCU), Nashville, Tenn. She holds a Bachelor of Art degree in visual communication/photography from Savannah College of Art and Design, and earned a Master of Library of Information Science from San Jose State University where she was given the Director’s Award for Excellence in Building Community. She is the lead editor for the ALA Government Documents Round Table’s peer-reviewed publication, Documents to the People.
Dr. Barbara Bonous-Smit Veteran Librarian Scholarship Winner
Rose Turner 
Rose Turner (she/her) has worked at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System since 2014, where she currently holds the position of Assistant Director for Liaison Services and Instruction. In addition, as the liaison to the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences she has had the opportunity to work on a range of projects such as systematic reviews and online course instruction. Rose received her MLIS from Wayne State University and a BS from the University of Michigan in the Program in the Environment and Economics.
Call for applicants: ACRL/NY 2021 Symposium Scholarships
The scholarship application window has closed as of October 15, 2021; we are no long accepting applications. Thank you to all those who submitted.
Awardees will receive:
- A waiver of registration fees for the online ACRL/NY 2021 Annual Symposium
- A free 1-year membership to ACRL/NY (benefits include participation in the ACRL/NY Mentoring Program, discussion group events, and professional development opportunities)
- Participation in a virtual networking event with members of the ACRL/NY Executive Board and the ACRL/NY Symposium Committee, to be scheduled during the weeks following the symposium
- A copy of the book, Knowledge Justice: Disrupting Library and Information Studies through Critical Race Theory edited by Sofia Y. Leung and Jorge R. López-McKnight
- A $75 gift certificate for the Strand Book Store, to be redeemed online or in-person
If you are interested, please note that ACRL/NY offers three scholarship programs.
Student Scholarship – For students currently enrolled in graduate degree programs in library/information science who are considering a career in academic librarianship (three awardees).
Early Career Librarian Scholarship – For an academic librarian who has been practicing less than five years following receipt of a master’s degree in library/information science (one awardee).
The Dr. Barbara Bonous-Smit Scholarship – For an academic librarian who has been in practice at least five years following receipt of a master’s degree in library/information science (one awardee).

Scholarship recipients are expected to produce a short article on their impressions of the two-day event for the ACRL/NY blog (guidelines to be provided).
Application submission deadline: Friday, October 15, 2021
Scholarship recipients will be notified on or before Friday, November 12, 2021.
