Are you ever confused when you navigate a web site? Do you ever feel manipulated and tricked into completing a task? Sometimes these “tricks” are not just bad web design but a relatively new phenomenon known as Dark Patterns.
According to UX designer Harry Brignull, Dark Patterns are user interfaces that are carefully designed to trick users into doing things, such as buying insurance or signing up for recurring bills.
Library web sites never intentionally create Dark Patterns. We want to make information accessible, user-friendly, and seamless. However, library web sites are sometimes difficult to navigate and users might get confused or lost. Understanding Dark Patterns can help librarians and staff avoid design mistakes so their users can easily get the information they need.
Our upcoming ACRL/NY UX Discussion Group will meet and discuss Dark Patterns on Tuesday November 10th, 2015 from 5:00pm-6:30pm at the Mina Rees Library, CUNY Graduate Center, room C196.05
