Work-Life balance: Organizing, Prioritizing & Reflecting
Dr. Kathryn Shaughnessy, St. John’s University, Queens, NY
In an environment where emails and 24-hour access to online resources give rise to working well beyond “typical” hours, and we may find ourselves pulled in a number of directions. Ryder Carroll developed Bullet Journaling as a flexible, fast *analog* system to Track the past, organize the present, and design for the future.” This session will focus on using some of the analog techniques found in “bullet journaling” to organize, to prioritize, and to reflect on how we spend our time, so that we can better examine possible paths to work-life balance.
The session will explain some of the benefits of using an analog method in the digital age, it will offer some sample journals that others have created, and allow time for you to start the BuJo process if you wish. You need not buy a special journal, any notebook will do. Your journal can be as simple or as elaborate as you want.
You can bring a blank notebook you have lying around; alternatively, some notebooks and pens will also be provided
Speaker Bio
Kathryn Shaughnessy is an Associate Professor, Open Education Librarian, and is embarking on an additional role of “Co-ordinator, Patron Experience” at St. John’s University Libraries in Queens, NY. Her research focuses on the ethical dimensions of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) access and ICT-literacy in education & library environments. She is continually striving towards greater work-life balance and looks forward to an engaging discussion with other folks who are striving to gain greater balance as well.
Being Present and Finding Balance: Mindfulness and Self-Compassion
Susanne Markgren, Manhattan College and Linda Miles, Hostos Community College
No work environment is perfect, at least not in the way you imagine it. How do we slow down, assess our state of well-being, and become more aware of what’s going on around us? More aware of how we are responding? How can we cultivate more positivity and better self-esteem? And how can we find energy and satisfaction in our current roles, while minimizing stress. In this workshop, we will explore these questions, and offer ways to enhance confidence, mindfulness, and self-compassion in our professional lives.
Speaker Bio
Susanne Markgren is the assistant director of the library for technical services at Manhattan College. She has written articles, reviews, and chapters for a variety of publications and is the co-author of the book Career Q&A: A Librarian’s Real-Life, Practical Guide to Managing a Successful Career (2013) and the forthcoming book How to Thrive as a Library Professional: Achieving Success and Satisfaction (2020). She serves on the boards of local and national committees, associations, and consortia, and coordinates a mentoring program for the local ACRL/NY chapter.
Speaker Bio
Linda Miles is Assistant Professor and OER Librarian at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College – City University of New York, having served previously as Public Services and User Experience Librarian at Yeshiva University. She is co-author of a forthcoming book, How to Thrive as a Library Professional: Achieving Success and Satisfaction, for Libraries Unlimited (2020). Recent publications include “But What Do the Students Think: Results of the CUNY Cross-Campus Zero-Textbook Cost Student Survey” (Open Praxis, 11(1), 2019). Linda’s research interests include students’ reading- and college-readiness and game design for media literacy instruction
