FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Assistant Professor: Supports a college library through providing in-depth consultation with students and faculty and collaboration for the ongoing improvement of instructional programs and practices. Pursues an active scholarly agenda, performs supervisory duties, and participates in college-and university-wide programs and committees as assigned.

The reference and cataloging Librarian works within a collaborative and collegial framework reporting to the Chief Librarian and teaming with the Content Services group and provides general cataloging support for the library. Performs full original and complex copy cataloging of various types of materials across all disciplines for general and special collections, including digital resources and other non-print formats. Evening and weekend hours may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs original (including complex) and copy cataloging in all subjects and formats including cataloging special collections, digital resources, and other non-print formats
  • Consults with colleagues at BCC and throughout CUNY as appropriate regarding cataloging issues
  • Trains staff as necessary; may supervise full-time and/or part-time non-librarian employees
  • Keeps current on developments in cataloging practice and participates in the evaluation and development of cataloging policies and procedures
  • Assists patrons and conducts reference and information literacy instruction across modes and serves as library liaison to assigned academic programs
  • Librarians within the City University of New York take active faculty roles, serving on committees and engaging in scholarly research and publication. Perform other duties as assigned. Continuous updating of knowledge and skills is required. All appointments are subject to financial availability.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications:

All titles require a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution. For appointment as Assistant Professor, a second graduate degree is required.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional cataloging experience in an academic library
  • Familiarity with MARC format and cataloging rules including RDA, AACR2, and LCSH
  • Familiarity with and understanding of the Dublin Core metadata standard
  • Experience with an integrated library system (ExLibris ALMA, preferred), cataloging experience and creation of metadata in an academic environment
  • Working knowledge of standard bibliographic and other reference tools
  • Enthusiasm for promoting discovery of information resources
  • Experience with using MODS/METS and/or applying Western States Best Practices
  • Strong interpersonal skills, good organization skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, and ability to interact successfully with a broad clientele both inside and outside the institution, and a flexible approach are essential

Preferred:

  • Use of DRM tools
  • Familiarity with Cataloger's Desktop and Classification Web
  • Familiarity with ExLibris ALMA integrated library system

COMPENSATION

Salaries are commensurate with education and experience.

Instructor: $52,612 - $87,155

Assistant Professor: $57,252 - $98,995
