Bruce Heterick:: Abstract: The 3-Legged Stool: How JSTOR Balances the (Often Conflicting) Needs of Scholars, Librarians, and Publishers in Maintaining a Sustainable Not-For-Profit Enterprise
Since its formation as an independent, not-for-profit archive of scholarly journals, JSTOR has had to continually balance often conflicting needs of the scholars who depend on the JSTOR archive for research, the publishers who provide the content to the archive, and the librarians who license the resource on behalf of their institutions. As a mission-based organization, this "system-wide perspective" has been instrumental in maintaining the collaborative nature of this archival endeavor. I will explore with the audience the importance of maintaining one's balance on this 3-legged stool, and discuss some of the unforeseen benefits it has produced.
