Speaker biography

Carla List is a member of the Instruction Services Unit at Plattsburgh State University of New York. She has taught "Introduction to Library and Information Research" (LIB101), a one-credit required course, since 1981 and serves as its coordinator. She is the author of the textbook, An Introduction to Information Research (Kendall/Hunt, 1998). Professor List also teaches course-related research sessions, received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship in 1995, and the Librarian of the Year Award from the Eastern New York Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ENY/ACRL) in 1997. She served from 1998 to 2001 as Chair of the Task Force on the Revision of the Model Statement of Objectives for the Instruction Section of ACRL. The Task Force's work culminated in the publication of Objectives for Information Literacy Instruction: A Model Statement for Academic Librarians, which was approved by ACRL in January 2001. Professor List speaks at various venues on research instruction.

"Plan Twice, Measure Once? Fitting Objectives to Standards"

The old adage, "Measure twice, cut once," cautions builders to plan before taking action. In order to assess instruction outcomes, librarians must select the objectives they wish to reach and then measure how close they came to their goals. ACRL’s New Model Statement was designed to provide librarians with a wide selection of objectives from which to build an instruction program, to design a semester-long course or to plan a 50-minute instruction session. Professor List was Chair of the task force that wrote the new Model Statement, and she will discuss the relationship of that document to the Competency Standards for Information Literacy Instruction in Higher Education and implications for assessment.
