Position Description

This is a fully benefited, full-time Harvard University position that has been funded for two-year through 6/30/25. There is the possibility of renewal, contingent on funding, university priorities and satisfactory job performance.

Reporting to the Manager of Project and Portfolio Management in Library Technology Services, the Senior IT Project Manager (SIPM) is a member of a high-performing, cross-functional team of library domain trusted advisors, project managers, business analysts, quality assurance experts, user experience and design experts, and technical analysts. The team stewards and manages a diverse portfolio of library technology services and platforms through effective project management, business analysis, Agile process, application design, and outreach and engagement with Harvard Library and other academic stakeholders at the University and beyond. Our focus is on delivery of world-class solutions to fulfill the core objectives of the Harvard Library: To advance scholarship and teaching through the collection, creation, application, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge.

This work is related to the DRS Features Project Charter.

The SIPM will plan, conduct, and supervise the completion of complex information technology projects benefiting the Harvard Library and relating to other University IT priorities. These projects require high levels of functional integration and involve multiple disciplines to be managed.

  • Responsible for assembling project teams, assigning individual responsibilities, identifying appropriate resources needed, and developing schedules to ensure timely completion of project
  • Work collaboratively and build strong relationships with colleagues to ensure successful project completion
  • Develop project plans, document key business requirements, and facilitate decision making amongst stakeholder groups & content to facilitate discussions in project meetings and document outcomes
  • Serve as expert regarding scope and project objectives, solution’s value and technology, as well as the role and function of each team member
  • Ensure work completion within schedule, budgetary and design constraints
  • Leverage steering and executive committees and other governance vehicles for decision-making, change management, and communications
  • Make decisions about analysis, design, and testing; solve complex technical problems; and, when necessary, provide alternative methods for achieving goals, and independent decisions as needed within the confines established by sponsors/business owners
  • Participate in and help support an affinity group of project managers and Agile facilitators to foster the sharing of best practices and promote strong project management standards in LTS
  • Advise Harvard Library colleagues regarding post-project operations
  • Provide training to stakeholders
  • Apply Harvard University’s IT technical standards and best practices
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience working on technology projects in academic or research libraries or archives
  • Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software, equipment and advanced IT project management principles (e.g. Agile) and software, Agile methodologies, processes, and tools, and Harvard or in a complex higher education institution
  • Proficiency with presentation and collaboration tools
  • Demonstrated cross-functional project management experience, the ability to influence without direct responsibility/control, and team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
  • Change management experience, of similar scope and size as Harvard’s, across a large set of diverse stakeholder groups

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy Project Management Foundations course (or external equivalent) preferred
  • PMP or other relevant certification and experience preferred, e.g., Scrum Master
Working Conditions

HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business needs allow. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA).

Travel to campus may be necessary based on business needs and the nature of work. Examples include bi-annual or quarterly Town Halls, critical business meetings or other work events. There will be times when being on campus is expected and advance notice will be provided. Additional detail will be discussed during the interview process.
