Research Librarian – Harvard University Library, Cambridge, Massachusetts

The position of Research Librarian provides essential support to teaching and learning activities in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Libraries. The Research Librarian conducts instruction, one-on-one and small-group consultations and workshops, and develops relevant online materials. The Research Librarian connects directly with faculty and students in specific departments through a formal liaison program, and functions as part of a team of staff supporting research and instruction as well as virtual reference support.

This Research Librarian will join the Services for Academic Programs (SAP) department. (Details are at SAP includes close to 20 staff members and provides several services for FAS including departmental academic support, structured instruction, walk-in and appointment-based assistance, orientations, tours, and online resources. This Research Librarian will join a dynamic, close-knit team of colleagues.

In particular, this Research Librarian will lead support for the Freshman Seminar Program (details at which is a large cross-disciplinary effort conducting several hundred courses each year. The Freshman Seminar Program was inaugurated in 1959 to provide freshmen with a unique learning experience through close and early interaction with members of the faculty. Freshman Seminars are discussion-based, with one faculty instructor and twelve first-year undergraduates meeting weekly for 2-3 hours to explore a topic of mutual interest.


  • Serve as library liaison to a small set of departments and programs as assigned. Provide course-related instruction, small-group assistance, one-to-one research consultations, tours, orientations and online support materials. Integrate into the academic life of the departments and programs, finding creative ways to address needs and connect back with library priorities and initiatives. Actively seek to integrate research literacy into curricula.
  • Lead library support for the Freshman Seminar Program by coordinating a small core team of peers and reaching out to a much larger group of liaison librarians to support specific freshman seminars.
  • Contribute to broad assessment of library services and programs.
  • Participate in college and university programs and residential house activities (e.g., freshman advising, GSAS, College House affiliation), connecting with key individuals around campus
  • Participate in virtual reference services.
  • Provide in-depth research consultations and resolve complex questions
  • Maintain current awareness of:
  • teaching and learning, assessment, pedagogical methods, learning materials, educational technologies, online education
  • trends in publication and the dissemination of knowledge in the disciplines

• May supervise student employees.

Basic Qualifications
• MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program, Masters in higher education, Masters in Instructional Technology or Masters in Learning Design required.
• 2 or more years of experience required providing research assistance in an academic library
• Experience conducting instruction for undergraduate and/or graduate students

Additional Qualifications
• Experience working in a large research library environment and in a variety of university locations (e.g., classrooms, student residential settings, department offices, etc.)
• Knowledge of trends in scholarship, pedagogy, research services and reference services
• Knowledge of a wide variety of scholarly research resources
• Excellent written and oral communication
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
• Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, connecting with peers to build momentum for new initiatives
• Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines
• Ability to work with competing demands in a complex environment, and manage time effectively
