The Manager of Library Governance and Engagement plays a leadership role in Harvard Library governance strategy, alumni and donor engagement, and executive management for the Office of the Chief of Staff. Responsible for a wholistic approach to governance strategy and implementation, the Manager develops, manages, and maintains positive working relationships with internal, external, and University stakeholders. This position is responsible for coordinating content strategy and key development communications. The Manager is a key resource to the Chief of Staff across strategic initiatives.
The Chief of Staff team enables people, facilitates processes, and fosters projects that support the library’s strategic priorities. The Chief of Staff’s portfolio includes library governance, assessment, program management, stewardship, events, and communications. The team supports this portfolio, special projects, and assists the Vice President for the Harvard Library with any urgent matters that may arise. This position reports to the Head of Assessment and Program Management and works closely with the Chief of Staff and other team members.

Job-Specific Responsibilities
Governance
- Manages a wholistic approach to Harvard Library governance strategy including library boards and councils, library committees, memberships, consortia, and collaborations.
- Have a leadership role in the design and implementation of governance initiatives.
- Manages the relationship between the Library Leadership Team (LLT), Harvard Library committees, school libraries and HL multi-year goals and objectives.
- Works closely with the Chief of Staff in governance planning including agenda setting, material creation, status reports, meeting preparation, membership management, logistics and briefing material for the Visiting Committee, Library Board, Faculty Advisory board, Library Leadership Team, and Harvard Library standing committees.
- Lead professional organization membership and collaboration management and communication. Develop and implement engagement strategies.
Content Strategy and Communications
- Design and implement overall communication plan and content strategy for the Office of the Chief of Staff.
- Writes messages for multiple audiences, including donors, and in multiple formats. Researches, writes, and edits materials in support of development activities. Oversee reviews by internal and external partners and incorporates feedback.
- Manages the Office of Chief of Staff communication and engagement initiatives in partnership with the Communications team.
- Lead and collaborate on content strategy work with responsibility for coordinating internal communications and maintenance of wiki, web pages, SharePoint etc.
Development and Engagement
- Develop grant and gift planning proposals, documents, and reports. Ensures all content is thoroughly researched and accurate, well written and edited, and compelling.
- Seeks input and vets materials with appropriate academic, administrative, and development leadership.
- Partners with the Stewardship and Events Manager to deliver high-impact public programs across the Harvard Library and HCL including in-person, virtual, and hybrid venues. This may include donors, alumni, and special events.
- Contributes to development, stewardship, outreach and engagement.
Office of the COS Executive Management
- Manage budgets, respond to special requests, and coordinate priority initiatives as a delegate for the Chief of Staff.
- Prioritize and respond to requests and activities for the Chief of Staff regarding visiting dignitaries and guests, and special projects.
- Plan and manage dignitary and special guest visits.
- Coordinate participation of stakeholder groups for the specifications, design, development and implementation of special events and projects.
- Prepare annual reports, and other resources and information needs related to governance, development, and special projects.
- Contributes to the development and implementation of planning, processes, infrastructures, and policies to support the Chief of Staff Team and Harvard Library goals.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Demonstrated high-level project management skills.
- A minimum of 8 years experience with an increasing level of responsibility and relevant experience directly supporting senior administrators.
- Demonstrated excellent writing skills.
- Communications and content strategy experience.
