Lehman College’s Leonard Lief Library invites applications for a tenure-track, Instructor/Assistant/Associate/Full Professor beginning Spring 2020. Candidates must have an active record of research/scholarship/creative works, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Head of Reference is responsible for day-to-day operations of Leonard Lief Library’s Reference unit and provides leadership for a high level of seamless public services to students and faculty. This position is an essential part of the library faculty team dedicated to supporting the research, teaching, and learning mission of Lehman College. The position reports to the Chief Librarian.

The Head of Reference:

  • coordinates and assigns Reference service point work schedules for face-to-face and virtual operations
  • supervises reference service and research support including virtual reference and consultations
  • implements data-driven strategies analyzing, developing, and transforming reference collections in all formats in coordination with key library faculty
  • pursues knowledge of emerging library trends and best practices including reference-research materials, instructional methodologies, and information literacy concepts
  • leads and mentors a dynamic team of library faculty to develop innovative research support programs and services
  • recruits, trains, and supervises Reference Adjunct faculty

The position also provides reference service, information literacy instruction, and collection development in assigned subject areas. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in information literacy and research proficiency; engage in appropriate library and information scholarship; advise students; and provide service to the department, College, University, and community, i.e., committee, administrative, supervisory, and other assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-track academic appointment. Evening teaching may be required.

The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a senior college within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is CUNY’s only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as an Hispanic-Serving Institution. The College serves mainly undergraduate students, preparing them for employment, the professions, and further study. The teaching load is 18 hours per year, and although the college is predominantly teaching-focused, faculty at Lehman are active in research, scholarship, and creative works. Service to the College, University, and community is part of the mission, as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty over the first five years for scholarly development, and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.

Qualifications

All titles require a Master’s in Library Science (MLS), Master’s in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. Second Master’s degree required for appointment to Assistant Professor. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

The candidate is expected to have:

  • academic library supervisory and instructional experience
  • familiarity with current and emerging technologies
  • ability to innovatively apply technology and evidence-based decision-making to improve the user experience
  • advanced project planning and management skills
  • ability to work collegially and collaboratively with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • experience with a variety of software and web applications including LibGuides and course management packages
  • knowledge of scholarly communications and experience with institutional repositories and Open Educational Resources
  • evidence of participation in research and scholarship endeavors
