The Director of Learning and Teaching Services will lead the learning and teaching services supporting Harvard College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). The Director will work across the libraries’ culture of collaboration and user-focused innovation to further develop teaching and learning programs that span the disciplines and academic departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). The Director also collaborates across Harvard Library including the libraries supporting Harvard’s schools to further develop cross-school initiatives, build staff skills, and strengthen a collegial and innovative culture for learning and teaching.
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Education, the Director brings together and coordinates the efforts of a dedicated and high-performing library staff across FAS libraries supporting all disciplines in building students’ learning experiences and research skills throughout the stages of undergraduate and graduate education. Working with FAS library heads and senior managers, the Director of Learning and Teaching Services provides leadership in assessing user experience and curricular needs, setting strategic directions and goals and evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives and programs.
The Director is responsible for the Services for Academic Programs (SAP) department that has developed and continues to evolve robust research services, collaborations with the Writing Program, General Education, Freshman Seminars and more, and outreach efforts for orientations and special events. Librarians in SAP provide subject expertise to many of the academic departments in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences and provide in depth research support to students, faculty, and researchers and teaching support to faculty and teaching fellows.
The Director will develop a cycle for renewing library pedagogical practice, provide regular professional development for librarians and staff in teaching and learning methods including introducing new technologies into research, teaching, and learning (RTL) efforts and learning spaces. The Director continually develops knowledge of the library as a learning environment and integrates library staff, services and tools into FAS learning environments including face-to-face, online, and hybrid.
This position is responsible for building partnerships to develop, assess, and renew a shared curricular vision based on course learning outcomes, instructional content and programming, and assessment of student learning and satisfaction. Partners include Harvard Library colleagues such as the Director of Science and Engineering Services, Head of UX and Digital Accessibility, Head of Assessment and Program Management, and Digital Scholarship Program Manager as well as colleagues from the FAS including the Office of Undergraduate Education, Academic Technology Group, Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, and Harvard-wide efforts including Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead process for setting strategic direction for learning and teaching in the FAS Libraries.
• Guided by FAS and library RTL goals, work in collaboration with FAS library heads and senior managers and the associate university librarian for research and education to design a cohesive RTL program, identify priorities and allocate resources to support learning and teaching.
• Liaise with Harvard College and GSAS heads of academic programs and student services to design, deliver and assess library services and build upon existing connections between the FAS curricula and the libraries.
• Supervise 5 direct reports to collectively manage a team of 26 people in the Services for Academic Programs department.
• Coordinate and develop assessment practices for user experience and student learning outcomes within the FAS libraries’ RTL programs to inform evidence-based decision-making.
• Lead and assess robust library programs and efforts to integrate literacies into the undergraduate and graduate programs.
• Collaborate with other Harvard Library colleagues in the development of Harvard-wide RTL initiatives and in supporting cross-school curricula and applying for and managing grants.
• Engage in research, scholarly publication, and professional service activities.
• Serve on Harvard Library and FAS libraries’ committees and task forces.
• Participate in local, regional, or national professional organizations; enrich professional expertise by attending conferences and continuing education opportunities.

• ALA accredited MLS or equivalent experience in academic library leadership.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience, with at least 6 years of supervisory experience.
• Experience as an instructor or providing instruction in collaboration with faculty in college/university-level courses.
