Brief Description of Duties
Stony Brook University Libraries is the largest academic research library on Long Island offering world-class research collections and services in support of the teaching and research mission of the university. The collections include approximately 2.5 million print volumes, 350,000 e-books, 75,000 electronic journals, world-renowned special collections, a robust music collection, and a growing number of resources in the areas of data sets, streaming video, and licensed mobile apps. The Stony Brook University Libraries include several distinct facilities: the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library (Main Stacks, Music Library, Special Collections and University Archives, Center for Scholarly Communication, Map Collection, Government Documents, reading rooms); the Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Information Center; the Chemistry Library; the Math, Physics, and Astronomy Library; the Southampton Library; and the Health Sciences Library. The Libraries belong to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Health Sciences Library is a member of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. The Libraries maintain memberships and affiliations in arXiv, Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, Center for Research Libraries, SUNY Connect, DuraSpace (as a SUNY member), the Council on Library and Information Resources, Digital Library Federation, Coalition of Networked Information, EDUCAUSE, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, Roper Center, OCLC Research Library Partnership, and ORCID through the National Network of the National Libraries of Medicine. The Libraries also participate in the SUNY Library Consortium, the NorthEast Research Libraries consortium, and several statewide consortia and partnerships. The Libraries are currently migrating to Ex Libris’ Alma library services platform and Primo discovery solution. DSpace, Content DM, Digital Commons, and Omeka are used for managing digital assets and a growing institutional repository.
The Dean of University Libraries will direct the planning and advancement of the Stony Brook University Libraries. It is expected that candidates will articulate and establish a clear, forward-thinking strategic vision in terms of re-defining and re-invigorating the role of a university library in the 21st century. For all academic matters, the Dean of University Libraries reports to the Provost and works closely with the Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences Center. - Provide strategic vision and sound management in directing the planning and advancement of the Stony Brook University Libraries.
- Develop service and collection models that capitalize on new and innovative information formats and access technologies.
- Lead philanthropic efforts.
- Form collaborative partnerships among the campuses in support of intra- and extra-campus research and educational activities in a multitude of disciplines.
- Represent the Stony Brook University Libraries locally, nationally, and internationally.
This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
