Critical Pedagogy Librarian – NYU – NYC

The NYU Division of Libraries seeks a Critical Pedagogy Librarian for a new tenure-track position located in the Undergraduate and Instructional Services (UIS) Department of the Libraries’ Teaching, Learning and Engagement Division who will report to the Head of UIS. The Critical Pedagogy Librarian will lead efforts to align the Division’s pedagogical approaches with queer, transnational, intersectional, decolonial, anti-racist and critical race theory frameworks. The candidate will contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of foundational library instructional sessions, focused on first-year experiences and introductory writing courses. This may include designing and delivering research instruction classes and workshops, as well as participating in program and curriculum development for the libraries. The successful candidate will also work with UIS to lead, strategize, and foster the culture and application of critical pedagogy in order to support others who teach at the Division (archivists, librarians, associates, and technologists). Finally, this role will build upon our current and future work around anti-racism by initiating outreach to potential campus-wide educational partners.

This position will be conducted remotely through Summer 2021; the successful candidate will be expected to move within commuting distance of the NYU New York City campus.

Duties

  • Develop and maintain partnerships within NYU Libraries and across NYU’s departmental and administrative programs in support of critical pedagogy
  • Create, distribute, and inform library teaching and learning strategies, services and objects with queer, transnational, intersectional, decolonial, anti-racist, and critical pedagogical lens
  • Provide guidance for the design, development, and coordination of library workshops and events that integrate library resources and services
  • Coordinate formal and informal instruction and information literacy sessions
  • Contribute to general instruction services for undergraduates
  • Contribute to general reference services, both in person and online
  • Work collaboratively across the Division to support professional development on critical pedagogy in instructional practices
  • Monitor trends in emerging antiracist and critical pedagogies
  • Contribute to state, regional, and national committees and participate in research, publication, and other professional and scholarly activities

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum one graduate degree (master’s level or higher), conferred by start date, for consideration. A second graduate degree will be required to be eligible for tenure. One of the two graduate degrees must be an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent.
  • Teaching, program management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of current and emerging issues, practices, trends, and technologies that support critical pedagogy, antiracist, and/or inclusive teaching and learning in academic library and/or university environments
  • Ability to understand, anticipate, and respond to priorities and trends in the library and university environments regarding critical pedagogies
  • Creative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to meet the library’s tenure requirements for scholarship, service, and leadership
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, belonging, and accessibility within teaching and learning services and experiences

Preferred

  • A second advanced degree in a related field
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse environment, either in a work setting or professional organization
  • Record of professional activities, including research and engagement in professional organizations

Salary/Benefits

Faculty status, attractive benefits package including five weeks annual vacation. Salary and rank commensurate with experience and background.
