Under the direction of the Access Services Supervisor, the Circulation Services Assistant is responsible primarily for performing circulation operations and customer service for the Access Services Department. The successful applicant for this position should expect to have either a Tuesday-Saturday/Sunday-
Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Serves daily shifts at the Information Desk.
• Oversees the Circulation Desk and substitutes for student workers as needed.
• Responsible for assisting the Access Services Supervisor in the coordination of library student circulation workers and all the associated clerical duties. Tasks include scheduling students, submitting student timesheets, and fielding routine questions from the student circulation staff.
• Supports the Access Services Supervisor in hiring, training, and managing the student workers throughout the year.
• Serves one weekend day at the Information Desk throughout the academic year; M-F schedule during summers and breaks.
• Assists Access Services Supervisor in writing and revising the student worker manuals.
• Maintains the orderliness of the circulating collection.
• Searches and reports on missing or damaged items; identifies damaged items to be evaluated by librarians for replacement or rebinding.
• Collects and evaluates circulation statistics for service and policy evaluation, in consultation with Access Services Supervisor.
• Assists in periodic inventory/stack maintenance of all library material; identifies lost materials and areas in need of shifting.
• Monitors and responds to Circulation emails.
• Monitors and processes fines billing.
• Completes other related duties as assigned.
Required qualifications and skills:
• At least 2 years of college
• Knowledge and understanding of integrated library systems
• Strong public service orientation
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a busy academic environment
• Ability to interact successfully with colleagues, faculty, students and staff
• Ability to bend and stretch to reach materials on very low and very high shelves
• Ability to lift a maximum of 25 lbs.
• Ability to push full cart of books or other library materials
• Fluent in English
• Proficiency with computer applications
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Detail oriented
• Experience managing student workers or scheduling multiple shifts
• Familiarity with OCLC Worldshare ILS
• 1-2 years academic library work experience
• Bachelor’s degree
