Position Summary

Collections Acquisition and Description unit seeks a Bibliographic Assistant VI. The incumbent will perform a full range of activities to order, receive, and physically process Chinese materials in all formats and accompanying invoices.

Responsibilities

  • Ordering Chinese language materials in all formats, including preorder duplicate checking, creating purchase orders in local ILS system, and forwarding orders to vendors.
  • Receiving, unpacking, and processing the received materials by stamping, security-taping, and writing call numbers on current issues of serials, etc.
  • Processing invoices, and claiming unfilled orders.
  • Preparing materials for binding and preservation. Update related records in the local library system as needed.
  • Processing gift and exchange materials; sending gift acknowledgments as needed.
  • Maintaining and reporting monthly statistics.
  • Assigning, revising, and training student workers.
  • Performing copy cataloging tasks on Chinese language materials.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Advanced knowledge of Chinese, including classical and modern Chinese in both traditional and simplified scripts. Language test will be given.
  • Familiarity with the Pinyin Romanization system.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and flexibility with job assignments.
  • Strong computer and word-processing skills including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work independently for long periods of time after initial training.
  • Ability to lift boxes of library materials up to 40 lbs., push loaded book carts, and carry materials up and down stairs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Previous acquisitions and/or cataloging experience in libraries.
  • Experience with OCLC Connexion.
