The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University seeks a highly collaborative and inclusive manager for the newly created position of Assistant Director of Special Collections Metadata Services unit (SCMSU). The Assistant Director, reporting to the Director of Special Collections Technical Services (SCTS), will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the unit. SCMSU provides a comprehensive, cross-collection, and service-centered approach to enabling and enhancing the discovery of Yale Library’s special collections through metadata services, data reporting and analysis, and special collections systems and tool management. The work of the unit necessitates a high level of collaboration with colleagues across Yale University Library, as well as broader communities developing and maintaining data standards, practices, and tools for special collections.
The Assistant Director provides vision, strategy, and policy for SCTS and Yale Special Collections data and data management systems. Leads operational aspects of the SCMSU, including leading and coordinating special collections metadata initiatives in support of collection stewardship, discovery and access; defining special collections metadata strategies and best practices; implementing metadata creation, transformation, remediation, and maintenance workflows; integrating and supporting training on evolving standards; collaborating on the optimization of information management and discovery systems; overseeing data reporting and analysis to support operational work. Ensures that policies and practices are in alignment with Yale University Library Technical Services and the Library’s metadata guidance structure and enterprise systems. Serves as product owner of Yale’s ArchivesSpace.
They participate in recruitment, managing, training, developing, and directly supervising unit staff; plans, manages, and assesses process and workflow change; fosters a team approach to the work; and establishes metrics, tracks progress, and regularly reports on the unit’s work.
The Assistant Director manages projects and participates in library- and university-wide committees and task forces, especially as they relate to the needs of special collections at Yale; participates in regional, national, and international professional activities-both to contribute to the profession and to grow individually as a professional librarian.
As part of the Special Collections Technical Services leadership team, the Assistant Director participates in the development and implementation of department- and library-wide goals and initiatives; contributes to the establishment and implementation of frameworks for responsible stewardship; develops leadership and management skills in support of growing organizational development and health; and contributes to the development of an organizational culture that promotes inclusion, collaboration, transparency, continuous learning, and productivity.

1. Under the general direction of the Director for Special Collections Technical Services, manages all aspects of special collections metadata related to collections management, discovery, and access. 2. Provides leadership, vision, and administrative management for the unit. 3. Sets annual goals, strategies, metrics, productivity targets, policies, procedures, and priorities for the unit. 4. Develops and leads multiple projects while meeting deadlines. 5. Manages staff including hiring, evaluation, training, setting priorities, and staff development. 6. Develops strong and supportive teams in collaboration with other departmental managers. 7. Plans for budget in collaboration with Special Collection Technical Services Leadership Team. Manages budget. 8. Collaborates with Digital Special Collections Access; Preservation and Conservation Services; YUL Technical Services; and other Library departments to ensure department products and services meet collection and staff needs. 9. Promotes the use of current and emerging technologies. 10. Works independently with varied user groups in a complex organization, and functions collaboratively in a team environment. 11. Serves on Library and University committees. 12. Participates in professional activities outside of Yale and monitors developments and best practices elsewhere to encourage innovation and ensure the excellence of the Library.
Required Education and Experience:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a librarian or archivist. Demonstrated experience with special collections metadata management, born-digital material stewardship may be substituted for formal training. Demonstrated experience with library and archival systems used to manage and describe special collections materials. Demonstrated experience with standards and best practices related to special collections metadata, born-digital material stewardship, and/or systems that support special collections data and management. Demonstrated experience in metadata policy formation, strategy and best practice definition, and metadata creation, transformation, remediation, and maintenance. Experience in the creative integration of automated and manual technical services processes. Demonstrated experience with planning for and managing complex projects and workflow assessment. Experience utilizing and tailoring communication– oral, written, and interpersonal skills–to work effectively and collaboratively with various stakeholders.
