The R. Barbara Gitenstein Library at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track Engineering and Physical Sciences Librarian to join our community starting in Spring or Summer 2023. Candidates at both the Librarian III and the Librarian II level will be considered. New LIS graduates, and those expecting to graduate in Spring 2023, are encouraged to apply.
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Librarian:
- Provides library services to TCNJ students, faculty, and staff, particularly in the School of Engineering and the Departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics in the School of Science.
- Services include information literacy instruction, subject-specialized and general reference, and collection development and management of library resources in engineering and the physical sciences.
- Engages in scholarly and service activities expected of tenure-track librarians.
- Participates in a library and campus community that is working to promote and fully realize diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice
- Reports to the Dean of the Library.

These intentional efforts support the recruitment, retention, and success of our faculty/librarians, particularly those from groups traditionally underrepresented in academe.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves as liaison to all departments in the School of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Integrative STEM Education) and four departments in the School of Science (Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics). Provides all necessary library support for these academic programs.
Instruction: Initiates and provides instructional programs primarily for students and faculty in the above-named departments. Provides individual and small-group consultation/instruction regarding engineering and physical sciences resources based on the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Participates in general library information literacy programs.
Reference: Provides general reference service and research assistance in collaboration with the other public services librarians. Provides in-depth reference service to both undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in the above-named departments. Some evening and weekend duties are required.
Collection Development: Coordinates collection development and management for the above-named departments. Works closely with the departmental faculty to assess the information needs of the academic programs and to select library resources in varied formats.
Scholarship/Research and Professional Engagement: Contributes to the field through scholarly and professional conferences and publications. Participates in professional organizations. Serves on library and college-wide committees. Support for professional development and scholarship, including designated research time, funding for conferences and professional development, and a tenure process mentor are provided.
- A master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program received by the time employment begins.
- A broad knowledge of engineering and physical sciences resources in relevant formats.
- Educational background and/or experience in a field relevant to engineering or physical science. (Relevant experience may include, but is not limited to, academic libraries, teaching or research positions, corporate or laboratory settings, etc.)
- Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to foster inclusive learning environments and mutual respect for students and colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Significant experience using engineering and physical sciences resources.
- Experience working in an academic library.
- Collection development experience.
- Reference or instruction experience.
- Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies.
- Additional graduate degree in an appropriate discipline.
- Record of scholarship and service.

Rank and salary are commensurate with experience: either Librarian 3/Instructor in the Library, or Librarian 2/Asst. Professor in the Library. The starting salary range is $60,400—$84,500, depending on rank. Final offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation.
About the Library:
R. Barbara Gitenstein Library is a five-story, 135,000-square-foot facility that serves as an intellectual, cultural, and social center for the college. In addition to housing traditional library collections and services, the building provides 26 group study rooms, two instructional computer labs, a cafe, a late-night study area, and a 105-seat multi-purpose auditorium. The library’s collections consist of approximately 750,000 volumes in multiple formats (including eBooks) that have been selected by faculty and subject-specialist librarians to support course offerings of the college and to provide a broad representative collection of titles across many disciplines. The library has access to more than 75,000 periodical titles in a variety of formats.
