Harvard Library is seeking a creative and self-motivated individual to help define and launch research data services focused on science and engineering. The Research Data Management Librarian for the Sciences (RDML) will help develop and coordinate research data management services with the office of the Director of Library Digital Strategies and Innovation. New outreach and programming developed by the RDML will demonstrate an understanding the research landscape, the role of campus partnerships, and the capabilities and limits of library support. The RDML will work with relevant stakeholders in developing policies, guidelines and workflows of data management services to ensure good research practice, protection of intellectual property, proper storage and security of research data, compliance with relevant regulations, and appropriate access to research data. The RDML for the Sciences reports to the Director of Science and Engineering Library Services.
Harvard Library is launching a team-based approach to supporting faculty and student needs in science and engineering. As part of this new framework, the new Cabot Science Library, opened in Spring 2017, includes video studios, multimedia production facilities, collaboration spaces, an active-learning classroom, and a dynamic space called the Discovery Bar. The RDML participates actively in the intellectual life and administrative activities of the Harvard Library, serving on committees, working groups, and other activities promoting the President’s vision of “One University,” and is expected to participate fully in librarianship, outreach, and library instruction.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), the largest division of Harvard University, is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching and learning and fostering cutting edge research and discovery. The FAS Libraries constitute the largest sector of the Harvard Library, including 11 million of the combined 20 million volume holdings of the full Harvard Library system. FAS librarians support teaching and learning for Harvard College’s 6700 undergraduate students and 4000 graduate students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learning and Teaching:
- Coordinates ongoing training and support for library staff on research data management fundamentals and services.
- Provides research support through one-on-one consultations, topic-specific reference (virtual and in person), and online instructional materials.
- Research, Scholarship, and Outreach:
- Applies a deep understanding of the complexities of research workflows and grant management to foster relationships with students and faculty throughout the sciences and engineering.
- Engages in outreach for areas including intellectual property, copyright, data management and dissemination, and scholarly communication.
- Ongoing Duties:
- Connects and collaborates with colleagues in science librarianship as part of the Science Libraries Council.
- Participates in Harvard Library committees, working groups, meetings, and events.
- Represents Harvard through active participation in relevant national and international professional and scholarly organization.
- Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Hires, trains and supervises graduate and undergraduate student assistants as needed.
- Advanced degree in library science, information science and/or science or related fields required.
- Three plus years of work experience relevant to the position
- Expertise on data management practices, data policies, sharing and reuse, data citation, stewardship, and digital preservation including relevant software tools
- Experience managing issues and developments in scholarly communication, and discipline-specific expectations for science and engineering (e.g. grant supported research)
- Experience with statistical analysis tools and methods for qualitative and quantitative research
- Experience in information management or working with data in a research context in science or engineering disciplines
- Advanced degree in science and/or engineering
- Undergraduate degree in a science-related field
- Experience supervising staff and/or graduate students
- Experience in working with vendors and software developers
- Prior experience with coaching / training peers and colleagues
- Ability to learn new technological tools and techniques continuously
- Experience with current technologies and standards used in institutional repository systems and metadata
- Ability to communicate effectively with researchers, faculty and students in STEM fields
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to work in a matrix environment
