Princeton University Library seeks a collaborative and talented special collections generalist to assist in day-to-day reference and public service operations in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. The position will support more than 2,500 patrons annually from within and outside the University community who consult the myriad subject areas held in the department’s books, manuscripts, graphic materials, maps, and other items that span multiple languages and five millennia of recorded history. The successful candidate must be committed to and be an advocate for public services and enjoy working with researchers of all skill levels, take up the challenge of problem solving, and have a welcoming personality.

The position will:
• support the intake, assignment, and completion of email and phone reference inquiries
• gather materials for and assist their supervisor to provide specialized instruction and support for graduate and undergraduate courses, including working closely with faculty members and curators;
• contribute to the development and implementation of innovative and specialized reference, instructional, and access services coordinated across the department
• oversee security and proper handling of collections
• contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to access services
• assist with scheduling reference and paging coverage
• contribute to the management of the RBSC website
• contribute to on-site and virtual exhibitions, and other forms of public outreach
• ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library/information science with a concentration in special collections/archives.
• Experience in public services (research assistance, class instruction, exhibition and outreach) at an academic research library, archives, or historical society.
• Demonstrated understanding of scholarly use of rare books, manuscripts, and special collections.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to sophisticated research questions.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including flexibility and temperament to handle in-person interactions with accuracy and poise for a wide range of users.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
• Coursework or training in bibliography, rare books librarianship, or archives (equivalent work experience will be considered).
• Familiarity with applications and resources relevant to special collections (library catalogs, finding aids, databases, Aeon, Springshare products).
• Reading proficiency in one or more major Western European languages other than English.
This is 3-year, full-time professional position with the possibility of extension, contingent upon funding, and staff development opportunities such as conference attendance and professional training will be available.
