Overnight Supervisor (P/T) – Stony Brook University Libraries – Stony Brook, NY

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree. In lieu of a degree, a combination of directly related full time experience and/or education totaling four years may be considered. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills required.

Preferred Qualifications

Library work experience. Security related experience. Academic library experience. Experience in dealing with college or university student populations.

Brief Description of Duties

The Overnight Supervisor will be part of a team of employees responsible for managing the overnight operations at the Melville Library. The incumbent will be expected to resolve patron, security and emergency issues/situations/problems that occur during overnight hours. The incumbent is expected to consistently enforce and adhere to library policies and procedures.


  • Work under the direction of the Overnight Manager and may supervise student assistants.
  • Ensure that the Library operation function smoothly and that library patrons are safe and sound.
  • Work closely with evening/weekend and day shift staff under direction.
  • Provide basic and directional information to patrons at the service desks.
  • Use library reference tools and online resources to refer inquiries thru email to proper subject specialist for answer.
  • Provide quality service to patrons.
  • Patrol all public service areas regularly and handle problem patron behavior appropriately.
  • Report to supervisor of any nonstandard situations within facility.
  • Assist with special projects related to Public Service.
  • Report found problems with library on-line systems and databases.
  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

This is a part time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
