Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s Degree Management, Hospitality or a related field. In lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree, a combination of directly related full time experience and/or education totaling four years may be considered. Two years of full time customer service or related experience providing service to patrons/customers. Previous supervisory experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to prioritize and perform tasks in a timely and efficient manner. Excellent communications skills.
Experience in library public (customer) service. Previous security related experience. Experience dealing with College or University student populations.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Overnight Manager will manage a unit of Melville Library which is open 24 hours, four days a week, in the late night (12:00 midnight) to early morning (8:00 a.m.) hours. The incumbent will supervise two part time and/or student assistants and graduate students who staff the library during overnight hours. The incumbent will also work the same late night and early morning schedules and some limited day working hours in order to keep in contact with library administration and other library units. S/he will be responsible for all aspects of managing the Library during overnight hours and for providing reference services to library users.
The incumbent will be expected to resolve difficult patron, security and emergency issues/situations/problems occurring during the overnight hours and will serve as a liaison with the campus police. S/he will be responsible for developing, assigning and maintaining the overnight shift schedules in order to ensure that there is adequate staff coverage during overnight hours of operation and coordinate with the Evening/Weekend Team Manager as well as with other Library Department heads to ensure coverage in the Libraries. The incumbent will be expected to schedule him/herself as part of the team coverage.
•Manage and maintain the schedule for overnight coverage. The schedule may vary during different semesters in order to make sure that adequate staff are assigned.
•Adjust staff schedules to ensure coverage during anticipated/unanticipated periods of absence.
•Provide public service at Reference desk.
•Resolve patron problems and assume responsibility for the security and order of public reading areas.
•Work with Associate Director for Operations in order to arrange for campus police coverage when needed.
•Act as liaison for campus police, patrol all public areas regularly and handle problem patron behavior. Incumbent must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
•Supervise two part-time professionals and student assistants. Prepare evaluations.
•Ensure that the Library operation functions smoothly and that a high level of service is provided to patrons.
•Serve as liaison with evening/weekend and day shift supervisors in order to discuss assignments and relay information about quality/timeliness of work completed.
•Identify projects related to Public Services. Plan and carry out related tasks. Assign the proposed tasks to staff.
•Manage library operations to ensure that on-line systems and databases are maintained and functional.
•Produce reports summarizing library operations.
•Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Weekend work may be required for this position.
