The Lillian Goldman Law Library is located within the heart of the Yale Law School complex, providing the Law School community with ready access to one of the world’s finest collections of printed legal materials. These collections are complemented by access to a growing array of online sources, as well as the strong interdisciplinary collections housed nearby at more than twenty-two other campus libraries, including the Sterling Memorial Library and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. A major goal of the Law School’s law library is to support the needs of twenty-first-century legal researchers by integrating access to print and online sources.

Position Description

Under the general direction of the Librarian for Bibliographic Services, the Principal Catalog Librarian catalogs monographs and continuing resources for the Law Library’s unique collections, both in print and electronic formats.

Representative Responsibilities

The Librarian 2 is expected to demonstrate excellence in meeting the position responsibilities, as defined by the job description and annual goals. Demonstrate effective job performance and professional growth.

Departmental Responsibilities

Catalogs monographs and continuing resources for the Law Library’s unique collections, both in print and electronic formats. Performs original cataloging for new acquisitions and for special projects in a variety of languages.  Serves as a resource for other cataloging team members and Law Library colleagues in resolving problems relating to the catalog and may revise the work of others.  Descriptive cataloging is performed in accordance with national standards.  All subject analysis, authority control, and classification assignment follows Library of Congress standards. Keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends, and applies new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.  Participates in library planning committees and task forces and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community.  May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts.

Qualifications

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science. Appointment to the rank of Librarian 2 requires a minimum of two years of professional cataloging experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Appointment to rank of Librarian 3 requires a minimum of five years of professional cataloging experienced and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.

Knowledge of cataloging documentation and tools including: OCLC, MARC, AACR2, LCSH, LCC, CONSER, ClassWeb, and Cataloger’s Desktop, and basic understanding of authority control.  Reading knowledge of at least one European foreign language.  Ability to work successfully both independently and in a team environment with collegiality and flexibility.  Demonstrated creative problem solving; initiative and follow-through.  Analytical and organizational skills; accuracy and attentiveness to detail.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Familiarity with current trends and best practices in cataloging and metadata services.  Excellent computer skills, including experience with personal computer hardware and software as needed to perform library functions and to perform minor troubleshooting. Ability and the willingness to learn new computer applications

Preferred Education, Skills & Experience
Reading knowledge of German.

Experience with legal subject headings and classification schedules.

Experience revising or reviewing the work of others.
