Manages and administers all aspects of the Librarya��s Government Documents Department as a selective federal repository and as a participant in the New Jersey State documents repository program. Provides leadership and expertise in developing library services related to the discovery, use, storage, preservation, and management of locally and externally available datasets particularly in the social sciences and sciences. Establishes policies and procedures in compliance with the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and the New Jersey State Library Depository Program; Manages a Library Assistant, who is responsible for coordinating and processing the physical Government Documents collections in all formats and conducts performance assessment reviews; Prepares the budget for the Government Documents Departments in consultation with the Library administration and monitors expenditures;
Provides in-depth reference service and consultations for all government information with an emphasis on U.S. federal government information sources; Serves as the MSU liaison to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and participates in the discussion of policy; Collects and prepares appropriate statistics and assessment reports; Provides assistance to researchers who are writing grant-required data management plans; Participates in library user outreach and information literacy programs and in library staff training with special emphasis on promoting government information in a digital environment;
Coordinates with Collection Management/Acquisitions and Cataloging, Metadata & Archives Services departments on policy issues related to the processing of government documents in all formats; Establishes and maintains good communication and cordial work relationships with Library colleagues as well as with the University administration, faculty, students and the general public to achieve Library objectives; Actively pursues partnerships with departments and external institutions that enhance the Library’s Government Documents holdings and services;
Serves as the Library Liaison to one or more departments or units; Serves as Library representative to appropriate campus committees; Participates in Library, University, and other professional activities; Keeps informed of trends and issues in higher education, research, librarianship, and technology; and Performs other duties as assigned.The above statements reflect the general details considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
Qualifications & Requirements
o BA/BS from an accredited college or university.
o Mastera��s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library program.
o Second mastera��s degree in another subject area or 6th year certificate.
o Five (5) yearsa�� evidence of successful maintaining, preserving, and weeding government information;
o Excellent leadership abilities; verbal and written communication skills; and interpersonal skills;
o Initiative, flexibility and creativity;
o Experience with statistical information software, such as Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and numeric data resources, such as Roper datasets and the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) datasets and tools.
o Strong service orientation background.
o Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
o Grant writing experience is desirable.
o Knowledge of general and discipline-specific research resources and participation in information literacy instruction is desirable.
o Reading competence in one foreign language is desirable.
o Record of disseminating professional expertise through such activities as having an article appear in a nationally recognized professional journal; publishing a book; serving on a panel; presenting a paper or a poster session at a professional conference; reviewing books and other literature and/or media; grant
Activity; providing service as an expert or member of a team of experts; and commitment to future professional development.
o Record of contributing to the advancement of the profession by holding office in a professional organization at the local, regional or national level and/or serving as chair or otherwise demonstrating leadership on library and/or professional initiatives and commitment to future professional development.
