The University Library seeks a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, proactive, and highly motivated person to serve as the Director of Public Services. The Director of Public Services will have primary responsibility for developing library policy and systems affecting all aspects of information and access services and will coordinate the work of Circulation (http://www.lib.unc.edu/circ/)
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Services, the person in this position will develop and implement a vision for continually improving and evolving library services to meet the changing needs of faculty, students, staff, and other library users. The Director will contribute expertise in information, access and circulation policies, procedures and systems initiatives through formal and informal collaborations with librarians and other staff across the organization, as well as task groups and committees. The Director will keep abreast of trends in access services and information delivery across academic libraries within the Triangle Research Library Network (TRLN) (http://www.trln.org/) and will apply that acquired knowledge and expertise to improve workflows and services. The individual in this position will convene the University Library Services Steering Committee, which is comprised of representation from all libraries including Special Collections (http://www.lib.unc.edu/
The Director of Public Services will directly supervise and provide direction and support for eight Department Heads of Public Service units that include the Undergraduate Library, Branch Libraries, Circulation, and Interlibrary Services. The Director is responsible for identifying and developing integrated, comprehensive and strategic public service programs and services. The individual in this position will also prioritize and manage staff, space, financial, and other resources needed to carry out these service initiatives.
Required: ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science. A minimum of five years of relevant public services experience, including supervisory responsibility. Knowledge of academic and research library trends and best practices as they relate to public and outreach services. Demonstrated leadership. Demonstrated ability to identify, plan, and implement the use of evolving technology to improve library services. Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating user service programs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to develop, maintain, and inspire a staff committed to excellent public service. Understanding of digital library issues and opportunities, particularly as they impact faculty and student productivity. Commitment to supporting a diverse user population and an ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with a diverse group of colleagues.
Preferred: Experience in developing requirements for and managing automated access and management systems. Experience with assessment and user feedback methodologies and tools. Significant contributions to the profession of librarianship, including publications, presentations, and/or leadership in professional or scholarly organizations at the regional, state, or national level.

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
