Chief Librarian (Associate or Full Professor), CUNY NYC College of Technology

The Chief Librarian at City Tech is responsible for advancing library services and operations to fulfill the college’s mission in support of nearly 17,000 students in a wide range of professional and technical baccalaureate and associate degree fields and a full-time faculty of over 400. The Chief Librarian reports directly to the provost/vice president for academic affairs.

As chair of the Library Department, the Chief Librarian (CL) directs or guides the work and professional development of 14 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty and other library personnel, including full- and part-time support staff and adjunct faculty. The CL oversees services including collection development and access, instruction and reference, and outreach to students and faculty. The operations which support library services include budget planning and administration, oversight of the library’s facilities and infrastructure, and the effective implementation of technology. Regular assessment of services, resources, and facilities necessarily informs planning. Personnel operations include planning, recruiting, hiring, supervision, staff development, and evaluation.

Over the last decade, via technology and creative curriculum design, the library has developed and expanded its programs of information literacy and scholarly communications. In addition to one-session embedded modules, the library offers a popular 3-credit course, “research and documentation in the information age,” with plans to develop interdisciplinary courses to be team-taught with faculty from other disciplines. Also over these years, the library’s collections have grown exponentially, with access to online resources representing a significant development.

The Chief Librarian is the primary advocate and spokesperson for the library and a leader in the college’s academic enterprise. The Chief Librarian represents the library to the college-wide Personnel and Budget Committee, the provost’s Senior Staff, the College Council, the CUNY Council of Chief Librarians, and other agencies. With the CUNY Council, the Chief Librarian represents the interest of City Tech and works to develop effective services across the university.

Minimum requirements: ALA-accredited MLS or MSIS degree; a doctorate or additional master’s degree in another academic field; plus a record of scholarly and professional achievement and advancement appropriate to a senior level position. The Chief Librarian will have:
