The Cornell University Library Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections (RMC) seeks an Assistant Director for Technical Services.
Under the supervision of the Director of the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, the Assistant Director for Technical Services leads and manages all of RMC’s technical services functions, including archival description, rare materials cataloging, and digital projects. In cooperation with RMC staff, other library units, and national and international partners, s/he provides strategic planning for RMC’s processing and cataloging systems and services and helps set the direction for the development of new digital initiatives that promote the discoverability of RMC’s collections. As part of RMC’s senior leadership team, the Assistant Director works closely with colleagues to ensure smooth operations across the Division.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Department Leadership and Administration (40%)
• Provide leadership and management of technical services processes, including the development and documentation of workflows and policies for rare materials cataloging, born-digital and digitized collections.
• Manage budgets related to technical services staffing, special projects, and media reformatting and digitization.
• Oversee collections management activities, including space planning for on-site and remote storage.
• Provide strategic direction for the development of new digital collections, projects, and services.
• Directly supervise 3 FTE as part of a team of approximately 11 FTE responsible for the description of archival collections, rare books, and digital materials.
• Secure grants or other external funds to preserve, conserve, and improve access to the collections.
• Serve on the leadership team of the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections.
• Contribute to the public affairs functions of the Division.
• As appropriate, participate in public services activities to facilitate access to Cornell’s holdings, such as providing reference services to the public at the reference and security desks, paging materials, or responding to email and telephone inquiries. Foster classroom and research use by Cornell faculty and students and others by providing instruction sessions, tours, and other public presentations.
Technical Services (40%)
• Work with curators and other staff to set processing priorities and establish workflows.
• In consultation with technical and public services staff, investigate and implement new methods of providing access to archival and manuscript collections.
• Coordinate projects, training, and documentation across the Division to ensure that cataloging and processing are done consistently and according to current best practices, that staff expertise remains up to date, and that projects involving multiple teams of staff are carried out efficiently.
• Make appraisal decisions based on documentary and evidentiary value, in consultation with curators.
• Assess the long-term preservation needs of new acquisitions and existing archival materials in cooperation with RMC’s curatorial staff and staff of the CUL’s Conservation unit.
Service and Scholarship (10%)
• Participate in CUL committees and groups.
• Actively participate in professional activities of appropriate archival, historical, library, and information management organizations and contribute to the professional or scholarly literature relating to libraries, special collections, archives management, or other fields relevant to RMC collection strengths.
• Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program, or combination of advanced degree and relevant experience in special collections and archives.
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a special collections setting.
• Deep knowledge of archival descriptive standards and practices, rare materials cataloging, and metadata standards and best practices.
• Experience supervising staff in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with ArchivesSpace or other archives management tools.
• Experience with managing budgets.
• Experience with grant writing.
May work with dusty materials.
